Newsletter – August 2019

West Dorset Badminton League (WDBL) have had to increase team entry fees due to a financial deficit last season.  This was due to a loss from the end of season presentation evening.  They are also looking for a secretary and a tournament secretary, to keep the league running in its current format. If anyone is in a position to help please speak to Kim or Bob for further details.

The end of season evening was very poorly attended and WDBL would like some suggestions on what format this should take in future to encourage people to attend.  N entry fee. ideas can be passed on and I think would be much appreciated. The WDBL tournaments should continue with individual clubs taking on the running of each tournament, there will be an increase to £8.00 per person.

The Poole league has changed the mixed format following the AGM which voted 8 to 3 in favour of revising the structure to 4 divisions consisting of 5 teams each playing twice at home and twice away.  We will then have 16 match nights which should be of a more similar standard of play.  The result is 2 extra matches in the Poole league.

Match nights will continue to be Thursday for home matches.  Courts have been booked for 7.45 using all 3 courts at the start of the match, so if you are playing please ensure you arrive on time.

From September club nights will be on 3 courts.  We hope this will result in people having more games and not having to sit out for so long.   Please remember to speak to us if you are sat out too long or end up playing with the same people each game.  We do our best, but it is not an easy task so your help and patience is always appreciated.

Wareham and Purbeck Badminton Club – Chairman’s Report

Wareham and Purbeck Badminton Club

Annual General Meeting – 29th June 2018

 Chairman’s Report

Welcome to our AGM, especially new members and thank you for coming.

Thanks to Kim for hosting our AGM once again here at Grand View we are very grateful.

Clubs like ours do not operate successfully without an enormous amount of hard work by a few individuals and we are very grateful to Kim, Bob and Brenda for their continuing hard work to ensure our badminton club continues to thrive.

We have just completed 4-years as a Club yet it feels like it is so well established club that it has been operating far longer. The success of our Club is down to good organisation but also reflects on our members who come together on club nights to make for a very enjoyable experience. I would like to thank all our members for attending club nights and helping to create a good atmosphere. Steve has been instrumental in reminding members about Club Night by sending out text messages on Tuesday mornings; I often hear my phone ping early in the morning and I often think who is messaging me so early! We have had some very well attended club nights this season resulting in us regularly booking a third court from 8.30 when the other group leave.

2016/17 season was very successful in terms of league and tournament achievements and  we knew that 2017/18 was going to be more challenging.

In the West Dorset Mixed League Yeovil entered a second team in Division 2 and because Wessex Wanderers had withdrawn their first team from Division 1 that meant two additional strong teams in Division 2. As a result Yeovil won the division and our team finished 4th.  In the Poole & District Friendly League our Men’s Doubles team finished runners-up.  Our Ladies Team struggled to compete in their division having been promoted last season. Similarly the Mixed team found it much harder in Division 2. However, well done to all those that played in our League teams this season and let us look forward to new challenges next season.

We had fewer successes in the League Tournaments than previous years, partly due to one of our most successful tournament competitors, Brenda not being able to participate. We are glad that she is now getting back to playing at Club again and hope that her progress continues next season

In the West Dorset Handicapped Tournament Louise and Kim were runners-up in the Ladies Doubles; well done to you both.

In the South East Somerset Miller Tournament Louise was partnered by Luli John and they were winners of the Ladies Doubles competition again well done Louise.

We have had to say goodbye to a few members this season; Josh Hodkin being a particular loss as he had become a popular club member and had done well representing us in League teams.

I am however very pleased that we have been able to attract and keep the members we now have and hope that the Club continues to go from strength to strength in the coming years.

I hope that all our members  attend Club regularly next season and continue to have an enjoyable experience playing at and representing Wareham and Purbeck Badminton Club.

A.G.M. held 1st July 2016.

Well attended meeting. After business concluded we all enjoyed good food and conversation until quite late.  Thank-you to everyone who contributed to a most pleasant evening.

Gryphon Friendly

The recent friendly match between ourselves and Gryphon B.C was most enjoyable.

It gave those members who had not experienced League Badminton a taste of competitive play. We would like to thank Gryphon B.C. for their support and encouragement on forming our new club.
